Williams Language Club

In service of the Williams College Language Community

Meeting 4: 10/29/09

Language Club 4th Meeting: 10/29/09

Language Café: Tuesday the 10th:

JiaJia talked to campus life: Baxter Hall is free!!! We need to book the room, fill out the form, JiaJia will do this.

Campus Life could provide us with money. We need to list what kind of stuff we need to buy.

We should also ask CFLLC for money. Dae will email them.

List of Things We Need for Language Café:

To Buy: Foodstuffs!! Drinks!! Lots of them.

Paper/Plastic Dishes, Forks, Knives, Spoons, Napkins

Posterboard, Markers, Colored Paper, Name Tags, T-Shirts (see below) Sharpies, large Paper-Notebook-Huge-Thingy for writing the Letter on so all can read it, also sheets for signatures, similarly large and Important Looking

To Get on Campus:

Tables, Trays, Boom-Box (for music), Microphone/AV Equipment, Tape, Scissors, Etc

A detailed list with estimated costs will be emailed by Dae to JiaJia/TY, who will go to Campus Life tomorrow to present it.

Madeline and Don (and perhaps others as well?) had the brilliant idea of our “servers” having a “uniform” composed of jeans and cheap  T-shirts bought at Wal-Mart. We would write the server’s language on the front of the T-Shirt in English, on the back in French or whatever (or both on both sides?) On the back would be a “nickname” in the server’s language, similar to the JA nicknames on JA Shirts. Brilliant!

The Letter

The All-Campus Letter in Support of Linguistics was finalized (though ideas for changes will be accepted until Sunday — email the exec. Board). The conclusion especially was changed a *lot* and *for the better.*

Places to send this: CAP, CEP, Dean’s Office, Dean McKeon, President, CFLLC,

Signatures: Online Petition: JiaJia will look at petition sites

Paresky Tabling!

This Coming Wednesday: JiaJia, TY, Madeline

Thursday: Dae & Patty

Friday: Dae & Carrie

Please sign up for the coming week via replying to the listserv !

Mentoring

Mentoring Parameters:

Mentees: Anyone can be a mentee, so long as the mentor is a year above. Completing the course you’re currently taking. Native Speakers not as mentors, but as language-practice help.

We  also want to get another database of all other speakers of language on campus together

Presenting mentoring: First event = an all-mentor-all-mentee skills workshop, two weeks from now. Monday November 16th (we can advertise for this at Language Café). The idea is to get everyone together in a room, to have some fun learning about study skills for language-learning

Contact Potential Mentors through Professors: Patty and I will email

Subcommittees!

An event is proposed: Skype-interaction. Patty’s been talking with Chinese Professors, asked Professor Cheng to get in contact with Professors over in Taiwan, take a week or a couple of days, set up stations in language lab, oversees people, to ask questions about study abroad, etc.

Which leads us to say: we’re doing a lot! Patty points out that there are two branches:

Club Institutions: Language Lab, Study Abroad Resources, Pushing for taking books out of NAB, getting computer from Language Lab, stuff that concerns getting our space, etc.

Linguistics: Administrative lobbying, letter-writing, signature-collecting, etc.

Idea of two subcommittees is put forth: Linguistics, and WCLC Start-Up

Linguistics subcommittee would deal specifically with Linguistics-issues, such as the letter, meeting with committees, etc.

WCLC-Start-Up: setting up said skype-event, getting us a space, etc.

Please email us to sign up for a committee (if you’re interested, you don’t have to be!) the general group would still obviously have oversight, but this is a way to delegate and get things done so that life is easier for us all.

Linguistics: Antal, Don, [Zac, Petya,] à Dae = oversight

WCLC Start-Up: Madeline, JiaJia, Meghan, TY à Patty = oversight

We’ll play with how the meetings will go: separate subs, then whole? Sub first part of regular meeting, then come back as whole? We’ll work it out.
